Interview Review
The
person I interviewed is a woman named Serenity. I met Serenity by total
accident at Ulta when I went to look around for some products for my project.
She took me by the hand and did my makeup while giving step by step
instructions on what she was doing. After her doing my makeup I knew I wanted
her to be my mentor; there was something about her personality and the way she
produced information that I knew she would be perfect. Serenity works in the
makeup department in Ulta, and has been involved with makeup for about 30
years. She gave me her personal contact information and a couple days later we
conducted an over the phone interview. She provided very detailed answers and
even branched out into topics I wouldn’t even consider thinking about.
The
first question that came to mind was just a basic question, “how to get into
the makeup business?” For the state of Ohio it is actually not necessary to
have a makeup artist license, meaning that anyone can say they are a makeup
artist and charge people for doing their makeup (Serenity). However most places like Sephora require a
skin care license (Serenity). Just because a license isn’t mandatory doesn’t give
an excuse for the artist to do a poor job on their client. The next question I had
was “what should a makeup artist do to be successful?” The main three things
are come prepared, practice and listen (Serenity). In a typical makeup kit
there is about six foundation brushes, six to five different types of eye
shadow brushes and a couple of blush brushes (Serenity). While doing peoples’ makeup
it is important to bring along a brush
cleanser to clean brushes as you use them (Serenity). Next is practice, practice, practice! Practice anything
and everything , it is good to be caught up on new trends and also good to be
fresh on how to do classic looks (Serenity). Lastly, listen to your clients
before doing their makeup (Serenity). Make sure you know exactly what they want
and ask any questions you have about the look they want (Serenity).
After
talking with Serenity I felt like before I knew nothing about makeup, or whatever
I knew was wrong. I absolutely feel more comfortable now with doing my project.
Her information that she gave me was extremely helpful and went into full
detail. I only talked about two questions but all the questions I asked was
answered with as much information as possible. The most important thing I learned
is to listen. I feel like its something everyone should know, but it is
something I never thought about while doing someone’s makeup. Overall, all the
information given to me is great for my product
